Garden Club is an asset to Worthington

The Worthington Garden Club

A unique and valuable asset to our town

If you missed the Worthington Garden Club’s Annual Spring Plant Auction, you’ll have another chance to get some garden bargains in the fall. The club sponsors these plant sales every year—one in the spring and one in the fall.

Plants, donated by the community and club members, are fresh from the garden. These sales provide funds for the club’s community projects and are an economical way for plant lovers to add more variety to their own garden. The prices are much lower than what one would pay in a commercial nursery and the quality is excellent.

In addition to the plants, crafty members also donate arts, crafts, wreaths and primitives items to sell—most with a garden or flower theme.

There once was a time when most every small town in the Midwest had a garden club. But times changed and they have all but disappeared, except in Worthington. The Worthington Garden Club is one of the oldest garden clubs anywhere around and not only has it survived, but thrived.

The club volunteers each year to replace and maintain the flowers in the urns downtown. They’ve also been known to volunteer to pick up trash along roadways and they’ve planted wildflowers along railroad tracks.

In recent years, their concern for Worthington’s aging trees led to a still on-going effort to replace trees along Main Street in order to preserve our “shady streets.” Several young trees have already been planted and the club would appreciate donations to help pay for more.

Worthington Garden Club members come in all ages and interests. They are a friendly group and warmly welcome new members. Besides their community projects, they take turns sharing gardening tips at their meetings along with how-to demonstrations and speakers. They also take a few field trips to special gardens around the area.

If you want to brag up life in the town of Worthington, include the Garden Club near the top of the list of talking points. Few towns can make such a boast and it is one of the town’s most valuable assets.

Yesterday, May 15, 2008, I was pleased to be able to work with several members of the Worthington Garden Club to plant flowers to beautify Walnut Grove Cemetery.
The staff of Walnut Grove were very helpful, and garden club members left the cemetery looking even nicer than it always does.
