Sign the Times guestbook
Since the Great Flood of 2008, several visitors on the Times site have sent a note saying how they are enjoying the pictures. Many have been from Worthington but many more have been from the rest of the world and want to see what's going on in their hometown. So today a new module has been added called an Old-Fashioned Guestbook - I hope you'll all leave a note!
More pictures to be posted later
Thanks to you all who've said they enjoyed the pictures. Kermit and I are taking tons of them but I haven't had time to post them all. I'm working another job and haven't been able to get it all done. If anyone else would like to add their pictures, they can be uploaded into the drop box. When this is over, I'm hoping to have a big gallery full of pics of the Great Flood of 2008.
Still here!
Your Times lady is currently working full-time at the county's daily newspaper and trying to keep up. It goes fast and the to-do list is long. I meet myself criss-crossing the county, coming and going from Worthington to Bloomfield to Linton and back again. It's caused this site to be neglected, but not abandoned. Just posted some updates to the events calendar this evening and will be doing some catch up around here. If you have news or an event to post, please send it in. You might be surprised at how many people visit this site every day! Despite the job duties, I'll continue to maintain this site for Worthington, though at times I may be a little slower than I'd like.
Trackbacks on site must be editor approved
One feature of many blogs is the ability for visitors to post a "trackback." This website accepts trackbacks. It's when someone from another website mentions something neat on this website and posts a note about it on their own site - then we can get a "trackback" here - a reference, kind of like a link. Confusing? Yup. Anyway for those of you who already know this lingo and capability and have given us a trackback.... I have a low tolerance for baloney online, feel very protective of my readership and just today have gotten a couple of trackbacks that I didn't care for - so fyi, automatic acceptance has now been turned off. This site will still accept good trackbacks but all must now be editor approved. Slows things down sometimes, but it makes the site less attractive to the goofies out there.
Photo Download of Veterans picture is up
This is new! Over in the navigation column on the right, in the Current News section, there's a new link called "Photo Downloads." Click there to go to a place where you may download the photo of veterans taken last Saturday on the steps of the Christian Church.
This is the first time I've used this capability on the site and right now there's only this one picture to download. We'll see how it goes and if I've got everything working correctly, more photo downloads can be added in the future.
Worthington Veterans Group Picture on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
All Worthington veterans from all eras are invited to come to the front steps of the First Christian Church for a group picture at 10:00 a.m. this Saturday, July 21. The church is located one block west of the Triangle on Main Street. Anna Rochelle of The Worthington Times will take one group picture of all veterans who are present. Veterans from every era and from every branch are welcome including Guardsmen and Reserves. If you have served your country and you are Worthington-connected, please come and be recognized. This promises to be a keepsake for our scrapbooks. As Worthington veteran Boyd Rawley used to say, we'll take the picture come "rain, snow or blow."
Blogging about Pearl Harbor victim, Alfred Livingston, and WWII
Greetings to regular Times readers and new visitors! My name is Anna and I'm the person behind this website. Since the number of visitors to this site is soaring as of late, I'm thinking a bit of background is in order.
The Worthington Times was started in 1853 and has served this community for over 150 years. I am the current publisher, but things change and just recently, I ceased publishing the paper on newsprint. The reason is because I have a family to support and the paper wasn't cutting the mustard. Now I'm trying to keep the Times going online while working a regular job. The past couple of weeks, I've been adjusting to a new schedule so posts have been few.
Whether I can keep up with the news and a job too remains to be seen. But I do intend to keep on telling stories. Eventually those stories will probably be in a separate blog, but for now, since there are so many people checking this current news journal, I'm just going to tell my old stories right here.
If you're here for news, I hope you're not too disappointed if you have to wade through a bit of history.
Since Alfred Livingston is coming home this weekend, I'll be blogging about Alfred and about World War II in Worthington. These stories are on the way but with no deadline!!! I just have to write my way around a work schedule.
Times site to get a new design
The Worthington Times website is relatively new - I've been working on it off and on over the last several weeks - and it seems to be a hit. Everyone likes color pictures! I want to thank all of you who have sent notes of support - very encouraging!
When the site first went up - this old newspaper look seemed to fit a 150-year-old newspaper quite nicely. But it's not going to work well in the future so we must leave this old style behind. A new design is on the way.
The Times has the best host in the world and the site is not going anywhere, but you can expect changes to appear in the backgrounds and colors. We'll be making this flip very soon - it's a big change so I thought I'd give you a warning. I think readers will like the change.
Big Times Thank You to the Worthington Value Market
The Worthington Times thanks the Worthington Value Market and its manager for finding a nice spot to put the Times news rack. This spot has encouraged more sales and reduced our “walkaways.” It also puts the newspaper in a convenient spot for many readers who always pick up their copy of the paper on their way out the door of the grocery store. Thank you for this support of our hometown newspaper.
About the Amber Alert bar
In the right-hand navigation area on this site, you’ll see a large Indiana State Amber Alert bar. A click on the bar will take you to the special Amber Alert site set up as a public service to help spread the word quickly whenever a child has been abducted. Once on the Amber site, surf around to read the story of Amber and what this system is all about. There’s also tips for parents to help prevent abductions.
When there are no active alerts, this bar will just sit here on the Times site reminding us always to be mindful of the safety of our children. But when there is an active alert, this bar will automatically start flashing in a way you cannot ignore. If ever you see the flashing display on this or any other site, click on the bar and the Amber Alert website will give you the details about the child in danger.
