Pride Week in Worthington, May 7-11
It’s time to clean up! Pride Week in Worthington, also known as Clean-Up Week, starts Monday, May 7 and runs through Friday, May 11.
During this week, the Town of Worthington will provide a place for residents to dump trash for free. It’s a public service to assist all of us to clean-up our properties.
Where To Take Trash
The dumping area will be south of Worthington on the town’s sewage treatment plant property. To get there, travel south past the Worthington Cemetery, over Vinegar Hill, and keep going—it will be on your left.
Worthingtonians Only
Street Department personnel will be monitoring the dumping area and only residents who live within the town limits will be allowed in. Others will be turned away.
Open Hours
Street Superintendent David Dyer said the area will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
What’s Acceptable
Town Council President Hal Harp said most all kinds of trash will be accepted including furniture like old couches, tables or chairs, TVs, electronic items, appliances both large and small, and regular sizes of passenger tires, at no charge! However, they cannot take larger sized tires like tractor tires or big-truck tires.
Pick-Up Service
For people who do not have a way to transport their trash to this site, there will be a pick-up service, also at no charge.
WPD Town Marshal Dennis Conaway will be organizing this effort assisted by Community Corrections workers and Hal Harp.
To request a pick-up, residents should call the Town Hall at 875-2641.
The demand for pickups might be high so make arrangements early. To avoid being left out, don’t wait until the last minute to call.
Bad Apples
Pride Week goes way back. Over the many years the Town of Worthington has been staging it, they’ve had to make some changes, primarily to curb misuse—like when out-of-towners were coming in to dump their trash. Pride Week actually costs the Town a pretty penny and every year the bill goes up, so there’s got to be some rules.
The spirit of Pride Week is to provide a way to get rid of things that are difficult to get rid of, particularly things that might become eyesores.
It’s not intended to be a substitute for regular weekly trash service nor is it intended for a contractor’s job-site trash. For instance, if a homeowner is making repairs and shows up with some old roofing, ok. But if a roofer shows up with several loads of shingles, not ok. If someone shows up with a black plastic bag or two of trash, ok. But showing up with six-months of kitchen trash, not ok.
The Town is expected to remain quite lenient this year about what they accept. But we’re cautioned to use common sense and not abuse the service. Too many bad apples could cause them to not be so lenient next year.
Christian Church planning revival
A Revival at the Worthington Christian Church will be held Sunday through Wednesday, April 22-25. Keith and Nancy Crowe of Taylorville, Illinois will be the featured speakers for services at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Sunday and at 7:00 p.m. Monday-Wednesday. A nursery for children aged two and under will be available. The Crowes have evangelized for over 30 years in 49 states and many foreign countries. Young and old alike are invited to enjoy puppets and special music from the Greene County area.
